Incubator Glossary

Season – Incubator operates in 6 month seasons (March – Aug. and Sept. to Feb.).

Incubator Academy – Classes offered on modern, music-making topics. 10 classes per season, must attend at least 8 of them and recital to earn credits.

Generator – Monthly party/jam where the best idea gets released as a song.

Producer Hour – The hour at every Generator session where attendees can play tracks through a computer.

Best set – Whoever had the best set at a show, as determined by the music committee.

Best song – Whoever had the best song at a given show, as determined by which video got the most YouTube likes in the first 48 hours after it’s published.

Accelerator – Program in which bands play shows and win prizes.

Combinator – The program where bands are put together by the Music Committee and perform at a headlining show.

Headlining show – A show featuring a headliner playing a 5 song set + 3 openers playing 3 song sets. 

Formation Week – A week when members can form a new band by pinning their member pin on the pin board.

Member Pin – Personalized pin assigned to each member.

Band Pin – Personalized pin assigned to each band, used to sign for shows on the pin board.

Pin Board – The board to which members affix their pins for show sign-ups and band formation.

Mixing Bowl – The part of the pin board where, during Formation Week, members can affix their pin to signify their desire to be placed in a band by the music committee.

Music Committee – 6 randomly chosen members who make subjective musical decisions on behalf of Incubator. Each member serves a 6 month term. 

Producer – Each band is assigned a producer upon formation. The producer assists their band(s) with scheduling, investment allocation and creative direction. 

Credits – Credits are awarded to bands who win best set or best song and students who pass an Incubator Academy class. Credits can be exchanged for prizes. 

Prizes – Could include band photos, recording time, outfit refresh, music video. 

Member – Members play in bands, help shape Incubator through its decision-making bodies and attend members-only events.

Member Night – weekly social gathering and jam for members.

Incubator Assembly – a monthly town hall meeting where members ask questions and share their opinions.

Accelerator Night – monthly social gathering and jam, open to anyone who’s ever played an Accelerator show and their +1s.

Acoustic Night – weekly social gathering and jam for members where noise is capped at 72 db.

Shareholder – Members who also have access to profit sharing, pension, and the ability to make their own paid job and show opportunities. 

The Share – Incubator’s profit divided by the amount of shareholders. Each shareholder receives The Share every season (+/- 25% depending on output). 

T.I.P.S. – Monthly “Themed, Improvised, Party-Show.” Immersive parties featuring improvised sets by pop-up bands.

Girls to the Front – Semi-seasonal jam and party for women, femme and non-binary folks.
