On the (in)Significance of Bird Party
bird party isn’t a big deal. That’s why I’m not even capitalizing it.
It’s a rainforest cafe-inspired DIY house show-party featuring two pop-up bands thrown together at the last second playing improvised sets.
And it’s just for fun so who cares?
That was my opinion going into this. Then I heard The Toucans tonight, in their first and only rehearsal.
In my never-ending quest to identify the best conditions in which to make music, I may have discovered some of the right conditions tonight because The Toucans. Just. Click.
Maybe the right conditions are who cares? because this gig feels low-stakes and The Toucans are making some really special sounds as I type this.
But I’m biased. I love improvised music.
Improvised music has a certain magic quality when it’s not completely falling apart.
It’s music being discovered and presented simultaneously.
It’s not a recitation of a moment that happened long ago.
It’s the current moment and at bird party, we’ll get to watch The Toucans and Coconut Kill make it.
Or maybe we won’t because we’ll be too busy partying.
It doesn’t really matter. These performance aren’t a bid for attention. They’re just part of the experience.
The bands will be given space to vibe and the audience will be given freedom to do whatever they want, including jumping on stage and contributing to the music.
Maybe a bird party is accidentally the perfect place to make music.
So I hope you’ll dress up in rainforest/bird attire and come experience bird party in whatever way you want.
And if you’re reading this after the party, tell me how it went. Or don’t. Who cares?
